Tips for Keeping Your Home Cool This Summer

Don’t let the heat and humidity of summer bring you down. Follow these tips to make sure your home remains cool and comfortable all summer long.

Preventative Maintenance

Having maintenance done on your HVAC unit before anything is broken might seem like a waste of money. But why wait until you have no cool air in the middle of summer to make sure everything is okay?

During a maintenance session or tune-up, the air conditioning technician should be able to spot any issues in advance so that your home remains cool and comfortable all summer long.

Close the Blinds

Did you know that up to 30 percent of unwanted heat comes through your windows? By installing blackout curtains or shades you can save nearly 7 percent on bills and drastically lower your indoor temperature.

Ventilation

Installing blinds on your windows doesn’t mean you should keep your house closed up all day all summer long. Opening the windows in the mornings before it gets too hot or in the evening when the sun is setting will allow fresh and cool air into your home, so it doesn’t get musty or stale.

Fans

Fans are a great way to keep individual rooms cool and to keep air circulating throughout your home.

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are the best option for bedrooms, offices, and living spaces. Make sure that your fan is switched to the summer setting so that it’s rotating counter-clockwise and the air is being pushed down into the room rather than up and into the ceiling.

Exhaust Fans

Exhaust fans are great in the bathroom and in the kitchen. They work by sucking hot and humid air out of localized areas which then allows for fresh cool air to enter the room, lowering the temperature of that room.

Cook Outside

During the summer, think twice before you cook dinner in the oven or on the stovetop. These appliances generate a lot of heat when they’re being used and most of that heat ends up back in your house. Try ordering out, making pasta salads, or barbecuing outside to avoid the unnecessary heat inside.
